To Užugiris Manor – in the footsteps of President Antanas Smetona

Užugiris Manor was given to Lithuanian President Antanas Smetona by the people. After raising a significant amount of money for the president’s 60th birthday, 80 hectares of land were bought on the picturesque shores of Lake Lėnas in the district of Ukmergė, and the renowned architect Feliksas Vizbaras designed a modern two-story manor house. President Smetona and his family spent the summer there for the first time in 1937. They say that each time the president visited the manor, it was a real event. The locals would greet the president with oak wreaths and flowers. President Smetona’s name day – the feast day of Saint Anthony – was always a festive celebration.

The presidential spirit is still alive at Užugiris Manor today. Visitors can taste dishes prepared according to the president’s favourite recipes. It has also become a tradition to celebrate Smetona’s birthday in August, with guests dressed in retro clothing and workshops, exhibitions and tours held on the grounds.
